On Sept. 11, Col. Michael Johnson, the 14th Brigade Commander of the Western Region recognized five Embry-Riddle Army ROTC cadets with various scholarships and awards for outstanding performance and excellence.
The Armed Forces Communication and Electronics Association scholarship is awarded to cadets majoring in the fields of electrical, computer, chemical, systems or aerospace engineering; electronics; computer science; physics; mathematics; science or mathematics education; technology management; or other technical fields.
Three cadets won the AFCEA ROTC scholarship bringing in a total of $9,000. Cadets Bryan Swift (Junior, CS), Christopher Korns (Junior, AE), and Kapualani Ampong (Senior, EE), each were awarded $2,000 for academic excellence and outstanding leadership.
Cadet Holly Szumila (Senior, SP/AE) was awarded the Medal of Honor Scholarship worth $3,000. The prestigious scholarship is awarded to only one ROTC cadet in each military service.
This is not the first year that an ERAU cadet has won scholarships, but this is the first year four cadets were recognized.
The fifth cadet recognized was Cadet Max Stovall (Freshman, AS) who won a $1,000 marksmanship scholarship from high school.
Stovall was on the Junior ROTC rifle team while he was in high school. During his junior year he set several state records and helped his team place third in three national matches. During his senior year he was state champion and placed fourth in nationals.
Stovall said the key to his success was "coaching, perseverance, and dedication to improving myself beyond what I could ever do."
