Joe the Plumber

Dear Editor,
Regarding Taylor Nelson's "Mythical Joe the Plumber" article published in Horizons issue on 10/29/08: I was shocked to read such language that was used in this article, such as "punish", "defecate", and "communist." I feel an obligation to defend our now-President-Elect Barack Obama.
The Bush regime tax cuts are due to expire on Jan. 1, 2011. Obama wants to end breaks for most individuals who earn more than $200,000 and for families that make more than $250,000; McCain does not. Obama's position would restore the top rates to what they were under President Clinton when the economy boomed. Don't we want the economy to boom?
We must pay taxes if we want roads and schools. Taxes provide and maintain the protecting and empowering infrastructure that makes our income possible. And besides, how are we going to pay back China for this $10-billion-a-month war in Iraq?
Obama used the words "spread the wealth around". It's not like he's taking cash from one person and handing it to the others. He wants to use the money to pay for basic benefits for all people that need it. Is a country not as strong as its weakest link? We need to raise the wealth of our population from the bottom up. We cannot allow the poor to get further and further away from the richest of riches. Put it this way: you can either help the poor people succeed so they may have an honorable place in the society, or pay for law enforcement to put them in jail and to keep them from having to steal and sell drugs and whatnot in order to support themselves.
Americans have to pay to be a part of a society. You said: "The liberals seem to believe that the rich should share with the poor." Americans want to live in a successful society, all the way from the bottom to the top-don't you? And, as Obama mentioned to "Joe The Plumber," if he gives breaks to people at lower incomes, they can move up the chain faster to becoming wealthy and making a quarter million a year, too. Don't we all want that little bit of assistance?
And if you are going to use Senator Obama's full name then you should put the "Jr." at the end. I think it's important to know that he was named after his father. Just like someone else we know… Senator McCain! Use his full proper name as well, John Sidney McCain III. Remember that people do not get to pick their names when they are born. No, imagine, Obama's mom was 18 and pregnant and was trying to come up with a name for her precious newborn. She decided to go with his father's name. Many parents do.
There are always two sides of the story. I prefer to look at the brighter side, the more positive side.
Well, may the best man win on Election Day! Oh yeah-he did! YES WE CAN and YES HE DID! He won by over 6% of the popular vote and over 37% of the electoral vote! It sounds like America agrees with many things President-Elect Obama has to say.
