The Greek philosopher Heraclitus wrote that there is only one constant in our lives: change. As our counterparts at the Daytona Beach campus put it, we are a university in constant flux. As Horizons Newspaper enters its 31st year of production, we are not immune.

Newspapers are impractical for our technologically-driven lives. What can a newspaper tell you that an online source couldn't tell you, usually with more detail? As the Editor-in-Chief of Horizons, this is a question I am faced with every day, but I have an answer.

Online sources are perfect for a quick fix. They answer all the essential questions you may have, and sometimes more. However, they lack severely in the human interest department: how will this affect you and those you care about?

For example, the Hudson bird strike incident was a national media field day. How does that affect you, or even this university? One of our very own professors is a leading expert in bird strikes and another maintains the national bird strike database. Unless you are in their classes or even know them personally, it is doubtful you would find that out.

The college press has a duty to bring you an element of the news that you can't get on the Internet. Horizons Newspaper has a duty to the ERAU community to keep you informed and entertained. If we haven't done that for you, then I see that as a personal failure. However, I am not going to sit here and go with the flow, continuing to maintain the status quo in college media.

The staff and I are making a commitment to you, our readers, to bring you what you want, when you want it, and how you want it. If you find that we have let you down at some point along the way, stop us and tell us how you feel. After all, if Horizons is going to request that the students foot a portion of our bills, shouldn't we owe you?

Now as a new staff takes the helm of the ship, you will notice that we have made a few changes in design. I hope the changes do not come as too much of a shock. As the need arises, with the help of your feedback, I foresee many subtle changes that will continue to improve the paper and its content.

Over the summer, the staff and I will be collaborating from all over the country to try and bring the incoming students a valuable orientation issue. Like last year, it will contain welcome pieces from all over the campus, and helpful tips and tricks to make the transition smoother. As most of you know, college is a big change that can be difficult.

Going forward from there, we have seven action-packed issues to entertain and inform you. With your help and feedback, we can cover every aspect of the university and campus life.

I would like to thank all of our readers for your loyalty and support. Furthermore, I would like to invite you to take some time out of your day and let us know how we are doing. All feedback can be sent to [PRNews@erau.edu], dropped in our mail box (#9157), or give us a call at x3891.
