Sports Fill The Void Left By School

Issue date: 4/15/09 Section: Sports
Imagine this: you are sitting at home over the summer months. You may have a job as an intern at Lockheed Martin or Boeing. You may instead being working as a bag boy at Albertson's or throwing boxes in a warehouse. You may even be loading up your schedule with summer school to get those pesky classes like Calculus III, geography, and International Relations out of the way. But what are you going to do with your free time?
Sure, you can go hit the bars and clubs (if you're twenty-one), but those don't open until nine or ten in the evening. You can go hang out with your friends back home, but you're already on probation and can't afford to get caught by the cops again; anyway, that gets old quickly.
So what's there for you to do with your free time this summer? The national sporting world has much to offer you in way of entertainment.
Major League Baseball has just started their season, and, so far, it's looking to be another exceptional one. The New York Yankees have once again spent more money on their roster than Ford has been able to make in earnings. Their star-studded ensemble now includes Mark Teixeira at first base, Nick Swisher coming off the bench, and C.C. Sabathia and A.J. Burnett filling out their starting pitcher rotation.
Major League Soccer also plays throughout the summer months. Although the MLS does not have the same big-name teams and big-name players that the different European leagues have, it has an energy and excitement that is characteristic of American sports. Try catching a game of the Columbus Crew as they attempt to defend their MLS Cup trophy this season, or find an opportunity to watch Landon Donavon, David Beckham, and the Los Angles Galaxy take on Kasey Keller and the Seattle Sounders Football Club.
Take a break during finals to watch the National Basketball League start their post-season play on Apr. 15. LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers are set up to take on the defending champ Boston Celtics and the Big Three during the Eastern Conference Finals. Kobe Bryant and the Los Angles Lakers should cruise to the finals through the Western Conference. The finals series should prove to be one of the best since Larry Bird and the Boston Celtics and Earvin "Magic" Johnson and the L.A. Lakers.
