Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University offers a variety of sports that not only attracts athletes around the world, but also represents the blue-and-gold pride.
ERAU Athletics provides athletic activities more than just the classical American triad of basketball, football, and baseball. This may not be attractive to those who are used to just watching these types of classic American sports, but the university offers many different arenas of sport competition.
ERAU Athletics consists of men and women's soccer, men's wrestling, and women's volleyball. These teams are of excellent caliber, and are outstanding for their respective levels of gameplay. These are all athletes that play at the very competitive collegiate level, at a level just below that of professional athletes. Just like the athletes who compete in these sports at the Summer Olympics represent their countries, ERAU athletes represent their university.
The athletes do everything that any normal student would have to do. They all attend their classes and strive to maintain good grade point averages. They eat at Chartwells, go through MATLAB classes, practice flight maneuvers in the sky, research the current American foreign policy, or create a new marketing strategy for corporations from scratch. But on top of just attending classes and flying, the athletes have to go practices and participate in playing games to the best of their physical capabilities.
The ERAU athletes do not have the "walk in the park" lifestyles that may be implied by the status they have as athletes. This is one of the reasons why you should come out and support these student athletes. Come out and show respect to the guy that you worked on flight plans with, or the lady that you worked on that last spacecraft system on. They might just be an athlete that had to go to practice, right after that meeting you had finalizing on your marketing project presentation.
They celebrate the same blue-and-gold that you do. In fact, they represent it more by going and traveling all around the country to show that ERAU is a university where both learning and athletics take place.
So next time that you have some time on your hands, talk to an athelete and find out when that next game or match is. Find out if it is at home, or maybe during a weekend down in Phoenix. Then maybe you can support them in their pursuits to victories and representation of the ERAU Eagle.
ERAU athletes are not just a joke, or a waste of athletic talent. Each player works hard in striving to achieve their dreams while playing sports that are mentally and physically demanding. They also represent ERAU and have the same pride for attending this university that you do. So share your pride, by attending the games and yelling, "Go Eagles!"
