November 30, 1999 was the start of five days that would change the way the world is run. The World Trade Organization was hosting its ministerial meeting within United States borders for the first time. Some people went for the conference, some went for a cause, and others went for a confrontation.

In the film Battle in Seattle, writer and director Stuart Townsend shows how a non-violent demonstration quickly turns into a full-scale riot, leading to the declaration of a state of emergency by Ray Liotta, Mayor of Seattle at the time. Townsend manages to expertly compile actual footage of the riots with his narrative.

The film follows various characters from all walks of life. Among the characters are four peaceful demonstrators: Django, played by Andre Benjamin, Sam, played by Jennifer Carpenter, Lou, played by Michelle Rodriguez, and Jay, played by Martin Henderson. The actors expertly act out the emotions felt by the demonstrators.

Woody Harrelson acts as a police officer Charlize Theron plays his wife. The collection of characters also follows WTO delegates, a journalist, and a member of the Doctors Without Borders organization. The events that followed the conference would change the lives of these people forever.

The Prescott Peace and Justice Center invites you to join them as they host a free screening of Battle In Seattle shortly after the tenth anniversary of the event. The film will begin at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 2 at the Crossroads Center on the Prescott College campus, located at 220 Grove Ave.

While you watch Battle in Seattle, the WTO will be attempting to hold its seventh ministerial conference. Stay for a discussion of the events and issues brought up in the film and the morality of free market capitalism after the screening. Decide if the WTO is ethical or come to just speak your mind.
