The Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University Flight Operations Center located at the Ernest A. Love Field in Prescott, Arizona received a much needed facelift over the winter break. The renovation began as an effort to increase productivity and the professional aesthetic that the operations center was lacking due to years of intensive use.
"This is the best and most professional aviation program in the country, and our instructors and students deserve a professional place to fly out of," said Dr. Frank Ayers, executive vice president of ERAU Prescott.
No renovations have been made to the flight operations center since its construction almost 16 years ago in 1995. "Over time, the inside of a building like that wears," Ayers said.
All of the walls were repainted, the artwork was restored, the entry way was improved, new chairs were added to the planning room, and a storage room was converted to a new lounge. A few flat panel televisions were added to broadcast current weather and flight conditions for use by flight instructors and students.
"There was no new money used to do this renovation. We pulled money out of other things and funded this. There were a few small projects which wouldn't have as much impact, so we won't do those," Ayers said.
Dr. Cass Howell, dean of the college of aviation commented that the renovation was a "small investment for the University to maintain safety and security."
The renovations are expected to be completed by this week, but they may extend into early next week.
The University does not have any new projects on the horizons aside from refreshing classrooms. Two other projects were completed over the winter break, including the construction of a new GSIS lab and moving the air traffic control lab from the flight line.
More information on the cost of the project can be obtained from David Hall, director of finance [hall187@my.erau.edu].
